TOMAS SARACENO

Revisited

21 February - 21 March 2020

The galleries new Revisted programme aims to present and re-examine seminal exhibitions from the galleries past history.

The first presentation focuses on the work of Argentinian artist Tomas Saraceno (b. 1973). Saraceno’s self titled exhibition was the inaugural show at the galleries past space on Hudiksvallsgatan, Stockholm in August 2007. This is an important year for Saraceno, with the artist activating projects aimed towards an ethical collaboration with the atmosphere, including Museo Aero Solar. These projects grew into the international, interdisciplinary artistic community Aerocene, which seeks to create an environment free from borders, free from fossil fuels. Saraceno’s practice moves toward the entanglement of diverse threads of thought, including art, life science and the social sciences. Enmeshed at the junction of these worlds, his floating sculptures, community projects and interactive installations propose and explore new, sustainable ways of inhabiting and sensing the environment.

Saraceno is renowned for his visionary projects that imagine a future airborne life. He has collaborated with many scientists to develop innovative ideas and materials. For example, he initiated the first digital scanning of three-dimensional spider webs, the research that resulted in his 14 Billions installation, presented at Bonniers Konsthall in 2010. His ongoing Cloud Cities project includes large-scale installations and smaller sculptures. The vision of a sustainable flying city is inspired by morphology of soap bubbles, spider webs, cellular structures and astronomical diagrams. The works often are constructed from a combination of readily available and highly specialised materials (iridescent foil, flexible solar panels, high-density polyethylene sheeting, polyester cords, but also plywood, mirrors, fishing line, and aluminium).
